The Quick Homemade Pasta Sauce with Sausage will quickly become a family favorite and can be on the table in under 30 minutes! Gluten Free and Whole30!Â
We eat at least one meal a week with pasta sauce. It’s not always with actual pasta, sometimes it’s with spiralized veggies, sometimes it’s sausage and peppers and sometimes it’s a one-pan skillet or casserole. Either way, pasta sauce is a regular thing around here.
And, while I do use a variety of high-quality jarred pasta sauces from time to time, there is nothing like homemade.
This is my go-to easy homemade pasta sauce and it’s loaded with flavor and protein!
It’s quick, easy, and endlessly versatile.
I highly suggest making a double or even triple batch and stocking a bunch in your freezer.

The Quick Homemade Pasta Sauce with Sausage will quickly become a family favorite and can be on the table in under 30 minutes! Gluten Free and Whole30!
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1 large yellow onion chopped
- 1/2 pound mild Italian Sausage crumbled
- 10 medium cloves garlic crushed
- 2 26.46 ounce containers Organic Crushed Tomatoes
- 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 20 turns freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds crushed
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 2 small dried bay leaves
- fresh basil to serve
-
Heat a dutch oven or other large soup pot over medium heat. Once hot, add olive oil. When oil is warm (30 to 45 seconds), add diced onion and crushed garlic.
-
Saute 6 to 8 minutes, stirring frequently, until onion begins to look translucent.
Add crumbled sausage and use a spatula to continue breaking apart as it cooks, 3 to 4 minutes, or until most of pink is gone.
-
Add spices (salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, crushed fennel seeds, Italian seasoning and bay leaves). Stir to toast, about 30 seconds.
-
Add crushed tomatoes. Bring to a gentle boil and immediatley lower heat to a simmer. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for at least 20 minutes (longer is OK).Â
Taste, adjust seasoning if necessary and serve topped with fresh basil. Enjoy!
