Sometimes you just need something sweet (like a lot of the time). Not a bite or taste but an entire dish of something that will satisfy your sweet tooth. Have I got something special for you – so easy and unbelievably good! That is, if you can get past the crazy blackened skin of the baked banana, then you will be in heaven.
Baking bananas bring out the natural sweetness and turn it into a gooey warm healthier dessert. With the addition of nut butter and chocolate chips, you’ll be in sweet tooth heaven!
With these campfire baked bananas, you can enjoy your dessert without any of the guilt, but with all of the indulgent flavor.
How To Make Baked Bananas In the Oven
Making baked bananas is simple as can be! The hardest part will be deciding which topping you want to add. You can whip up your own campfire bananas in a flash by just following these few easy steps.
- Preheat oven to 350F and slice each banana 3/4 of the way through the center (photo image #1).
- Spread the banana apart and spread your nut butter along inside of each banana (photo image #2).
- Sprinkle the chocolate chips into each banana and finish with a pinch of sea salt (photo image #2).
- Lastly, wrap the outside with tinfoil and place each banana on a cookie sheet. Bake and serve while hot (photo image #3).
How to Make Baked Bananas for Camping
Baked Banana Boats are the PERFECT easy camping dessert! Kids will especially love being able to help build and customize their own banana boats.
Follow the instructions for stuffing the bananas but take care to pinch the top of the tinfoil together to make a “packet”. Be sure that the tinfoil doesn’t touch the nut butter or chocolate and then gently place into a vessel over your campfire.
Depending on the height from the fire and strength of the fire, the baked bananas may take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. Check them after 10 minutes and then in 5-minute increments. Serve with a spoon and enjoy!
Can I Add Different Topping To Baked Bananas?
You could really put almost anything on these – shaved coconut, raisins, peanut butter chips, greek yogurt, mini marshmallows.
The possibilities are endless but the great news is that you don’t need a lot of anything (just a teaspoon or two) to make this decadent dessert!
My husband loves milk chocolate, while I love dark chocolate. If you look closely in the instructions photos, you will notice one banana with milk chocolate chips and the other banana with dark chocolate chunks. Also, we often use chunky peanut butter but creamy peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, and SunButter are wonderful as well – use your favorite!
Tips For Baked Bananas
- Be sure to bake the banana in the skin (covered in tin foil) but feel free to scoop out the insides into a bowl if the skin freaks you out (like my husband!).
- Make sure your bananas are ripe.
- If the chocolate and nut butter don’t look completely melted, use a spoon or butter knife to gently mix them together and pop back into the oven (or fire) for 2 to 3 minutes!

- 2 medium Bananas
- 2 teaspoons nut butter
- 2 teaspoons chocolate chips
- 1 pinch sea salt

Preheat oven to 350F.

Spread banana apart and spread 1 teaspoon nut butter along inside of each banana. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of chocolate chips into each banana and finish with a pinch of sea salt.

Wrap outside with tinfoil and place on a cookie sheet. Bake for 15 minutes. Serve while hot and Enjoy!

Follow preparation instructions above but gently pinch tinfoil together at the top (make sure it isn't touching the chocolate or nut butter). They make take 10 to 20 minutes depending on your campfire and how high you place the bananas over the fire.

We have made these for years when camping and my teen daughter and her friends love to make these at summer bonfires in our back yard. We put out a buffet of ingredients which include a variety of chips (chocolate, dark chocolate, peanut butter, butterscotch, etc…) Coconut, nuts, mini marshmallows, caramels, etc… Once banana is filled, we replace center piece which we cut out so there is a “lid”. Then we wrap in foil and place in hot coals to cook. Banana Boat is done when it feels ” squishy” when picked up. For safety, please wear leather, fire retardant gloves. Yummy! Thanks for sharing the safer, cleaner, and year round oven method!

That looks great, but is that really only one teaspoon of chocolate on each banana? It looks more like a tablespoon or more to me.
