Sugar Free, Real Food Ingredient Magic Shell that is Vegan and Low Carb and made in under 5 minutes!
Did you know that you can make your own Magic Shell at home? If you like Magic Shell on any type of frozen dessert, then trust me, you want to make it yourself.
Commercially manufactured Magic Shell is made with the crappiest quality ingredients and the unnecessary addition of both milk and soy.
Here are the ingredients:
SUGAR, SUNFLOWER OIL, COCONUT OIL, CHOCOLATE, WHOLE MILK SOLIDS, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: SOY LECITHIN, SALT, VANILLA.
If you want to keep your dessert free of GMO’s and junk, I am here to tell you that you can make your own in minutes!
All you need is coconut oil, cocoa (or cacao powder), pure vanilla extract, finely ground sea salt, pure vanilla extract and some liquid stevia (or other sweetener – see NOTES below).
I have made homemade Magic Shell with pure maple syrup and coconut sugar and while they are both DELISH, I have been cutting sugar from my diet – yes, even natural sugars – so my most recent variation of these is a totally sugar free and low carb version using Stevia.
If you hate the taste of stevia or don’t like using it for whatever reason, go with pure maple syrup or coconut sugar. For the coconut sugar, add it to the coconut oil and dissolve it so it’s not so granular.
You probably already have all of those ingredients in your house so let’s get mixing and make some!
NOTES:
- If you are subbing pure maple syrup, start with 1 1/2 Tablespoons and taste. Add more until desired sweetness is reached.
- If you are subbing coconut sugar, I recommend starting with 2 Tablespoons and hearing with the coconut oil to dissolve it.
- Every brand of stevia tastes different so make sure you taste and LIKE the one you use or it will ruin the taste of your Magic Shell! My favorite brand is Nu Naturals.

Sugar Free, Real Food Ingredient Magic Shell that is Vegan and Low Carb and made in under 5 minutes!
- 1/4 cup melted organic virgin coconut oil
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon high quality liquid Stevia see NOTES for substitutions
- 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- pinch finely ground sea salt
-
Combine all ingredients together until well mixed and lump free. I usually use a fork or small whisk. Pour over ice cold frozen dessert, watch harden immediately and Enjoy!
STORAGE AND REHEATING: Store any unused Magic Shell in the fridge and reheat in either the microwave or stove-top until just melted to use again. Make sure you allow to cool for a few minutes so it's not super hot when pouring over frozen desserts.

I love that you made your own magic shell, every single magic shell I’ve ever had was out of a bottle. Definitely trying this recipe out.
EverydayMaven says
Thanks Thalia! You can also use maple syrup if you don’t want to use stevia. It works with both!

What a magical recipe! The commercial stuff is just awful. Well, it tastes good, but the ingredients list is awful! This is such an improvement. Brilliant idea — thanks.

That looks so good. You are amazing. I always liked Magic Shell and you’re right it’s disgusting reading all the junk in it. I don’t eat ice cream, but I’m sure this will taste good on frozen bananas. I too, would like to cut down on sugar and processed food.

Oh my gosh Debbie! It is SOOOO good on frozen fruit chunks. Heaven!!! 🙂
