READ PARTS 1 and 2
BEFORE
Our “before” bedroom wasn’t anything special. When we moved last year, we literally dumped our bed, dresser, end tables and lamps into the master bedroom and did virtually nothing else.
While our old bed frame was solid wood and free from toxic materials, it just wasn’t my style. My hubs really loved it and forbad me from getting rid of the dresser. I prefer a more modern look but marriage is all about compromise, you know what I mean?
We both agreed that we wanted to keep our end tables since they have sentimental value. They are one of the first pieces of furniture we got when we moved in together forever ago and we sanded them down and carefully refinished them. They are also solid wood so A-OK.
So, our starting point was keeping the dresser / mirror, end tables, some artwork and transitioning as many materials as possible to non-toxic, sustainable, natural materials to minimize off-gassing and the constant exposure to toxic materials. All under the guise of creating a modern luxe zen space that felt welcoming and fresh at the end of the day!
AFTER
We worked closely with Bedrooms & More to find the perfect bed frame. I really wanted a super luxurious tufted bed frame but realized that I could limit the fill material by compromising and going with a hybrid frame.
This frame looks like wood but is actually metal with linen and brass hardware. It’s modern but not so modern that my husband hates it ;).
P.S. If you want this frame, tell the awesome salespeople at Bedrooms & More it’s the”one from Alyssa’s Blog Post” and they will give you all of the details on cost / size / etc.
You’ll find all of the deets on the mattress in Post #1 and everything about the bedding (topper, matress pad, comforter, pillows) in Post #2.
We got a couple sets of bamboo sheets from Bedrooms & More per their recommendation. Not going to lie, I was hesitant about bamboo sheets. I didn’t think they would be luxurious enough.
Oh man – was I wrong!! They are so soft – almost silky smooth – and so comfortable. Plus, they are naturally antimicrobial and help with temperature-regulating. Highly recommend.
For a duvet cover, we went with a undyed linen and added some decorative shams and pillows as well as a Merino Wool throw from Bedrooms & More’s new collection. Basically all of the materials that we leave on the bed to sleep are natural, breathable and free from toxic dyes or treatments.
We added a jute area rug to add some texture and a hint of color as well as linen with brass curtains and an additional layer of flowy sheers to take advantage of the amazing breezes our room gets while maintaining some privacy.
The dresser stayed but got a bit of a makeover with some candles, our essential oil diffuser, my vintage carved jewelry box (I scored at an Estate Sale years ago) and paired with a large, vibrant plant to add color, life and help with naturally detoxifying the air.
Last but not least, we splurged and added in this velvet chair with brass trim. Truth be told, it’s the only piece that doesn’t really vibe with our non-toxic plan but we fell in love with it, felt like it really brought the room together and justified it because it’s really just a glorified pillow holder for at night and not where we sleep.
Look at Fergie being all cute in her dog bed. She is the BEST!
THOUGHTS
We are sleeping so good. The mattress and bedding materials make an even bigger difference than either of us expected. SERIOUSLY. It’s crazy and so comfortable. I can’t even with how in love we are with everything. From a design standpoint, I feel good about the balance we achieved between non-toxic (where it really matters) and style. The new bedroom feels luxurious but comfortable and has just enough color to keep it fun.
