A year+ in the making – BIG NEWS!!!

I have been dying over here keeping this a secret from all of you!

For the past year and a half, I have been working on what I think is a pretty amazing book project with another food blogger – the amazingly talented Faith from An Edible Mosaic.

It all started with this PB & J smoothie I posted in March of 2012. Faith and I had recently begun what seemed like an instant friendship and were emailing back and forth about some other food blogging related things when this PB & J smoothie caught her eye. She mentioned that she was also an almost daily smoothie drinker and was compiling smoothie recipes. So was I! Not having any other big plans for the recipes, I was going to start a smoothie series here on Everyday Maven but when Faith and I got to talking, something more exciting happened.

Let me introduce you to BLEND: Artisanal Smoothies for Food Lovers.

The first smoothie book of its kind. Artisanal, hand-crafted recipes built on complex flavor profiles but based on simple, readily accessible ingredients.

Each and every smoothie name is descriptive of the flavor profile of the drink (Vanilla Cake Batter, Spiced Date Coffee, Caramel Turtle, etc.) and made with easily accessible ingredients.

ALL of our smoothies are vegan or vegan-friendly (some contain honey which can be substituted), gluten-free, dairy-free and made with wholesome, real food ingredients.

Initially, when Faith asked me if I was interested in collaborating on a smoothie project, we weren’t clear if that project would be an ebook, a published book or a blog series. But after talking it through and really fleshing it out, we both wanted to pursue this project as a book.

We wrote a book proposal and submitted it to a publisher. After a couple of months of review time, we were lucky enough to get an offer from an International publisher to bring our smoothie project to market. That is the great news. The bad news is that the publisher just didn’t see our vision and wanted to change the design and scope so significantly neither Faith or I wanted to put our names on it. We negotiated in good faith for months and months and finally just decided to walk away.

Let me tell you it is not easy walking away from a book deal. Repeat, it is not easy walking away from a book deal.

But you have to trust your gut and even though it was hard, neither of us had any doubt we were doing the right thing. With the clock ticking, we submitted to another publisher, this time a boutique publishing house who seemed like a perfect fit. Except they weren’t and decided to pass on our proposal.

Faith and I had been diligently working on our project the entire time and at this point, all of our recipes were written, tested, re-tested and tweaked some more. Faith had taken all of the (wait until you see the styling!) photographs and our outlines were complete for the remaining content.

We decided we didn’t want to wait any longer to bring this concept to market so we switched gears and decided to publish BLEND ourselves.

We’re actually releasing two e-books; the first is called Blend: The Basics and it contains all of our smoothie-making tips and tricks. BLEND: The Basics is essentially our guidebook for how to make the perfect artisanal smoothie time and time again.

Our other e-book is called Blend: Artisanal Smoothies for Food Lovers, Summer Volume 1. It’s a collection of 25 of our absolute favorite summer and fall-themed smoothies divided into four chapters: Indulgence, Fruit, Green, and Coffee + Tea.

I also have to give a huge THANK YOU to Lori Lange of Recipe Girl for graciously writing our foreword. Lori is not only smack dab in the middle of traveling and  promoting The Recipe Girl Cookbook but she has also been in the middle of moving – all of that on top of running a hugely successful food blog. Thank you again Lori!

We have been working around the clock to finish and could not be more thrilled to FINALLY be releasing BLEND: The Basics as well as our first (yep, you heard me – I said our first because there are others in the works!) recipe volume: BLEND: Artisanal Smoothies for Food Lovers – Summer Volume I.

Next Friday, June 21st –The first day of summer!

We are going to be hosting an online launch party with some other amazing food bloggers and a huge giveaway with over $1750 in smoothie making prizes for you to win!
Blenders, both high-speed and regular, gift bags of organic goodies that we use to make BLEND smoothies, and, of course, copies of both books!

So, until then, here is a picture of one of my favorite green smoothies from Summer Volume I!

How exciting!! There can’t be a more perfect collaboration of bloggers out there :) Love the idea of Blend and thanks for sharing the trials and turbulence’s you girls went through in regards to publishing. There’s a lot for us to learn here — but for now, CONGRATS!! I’m so proud to call you both my friends :)

Exciting news! Congrats to both of you! I think for most new authors, self-publishing is the way to go. And I say that as a former book editor. Authors always end up doing almost all of the promotional work anyway, and the mechanics of self-publishing are inexpensive and easy these days (for ebooks in particular). Plus you get to control your own content, as you’ve found out. This is really exciting news – good luck!

Congratulations to you both! I too love smoothies, partly because they’re delicious and partly because they’re nutritious and easily digestible for someone with “issues.” I recently found your site and am really enjoying it. I found Faith’s site a few months ago and she very generously had kind words after taking a look at mine. I wish you both the best with this venture.
