“Better” Halloween Candy Options

I hate to admit this but I am not a huge fan of Halloween. I know, what a party pooper.

I just never really got into the crazy costumes and dressing up. With that being said, I have been to some amazing Halloween parties where OTHER creative people have adorned themselves with the most amazing and insane costumes and I LOVE seeing it all. I would just prefer to be a non-costumed bystander, which is clearly lame.

Another huge factor that has played a huge part in my lack of Halloween enthusiasm is where we have lived for the last decade –  really urban areas where kids just don’t really trick-or-treat.

Now that I am a mom, Halloween is making its way back into our lives and I am approaching it with a different (and better) attitude. My son is finally old enough to “get” Halloween and has picked out a costume (Pirate) for his Pre-School party, we have decorations outside our house, pumpkins to be carved into jack-o-lanterns this weekend and even a special Halloween basket to give out candy should any little ones make their way to our front door.

What I fill that basket with really matters to me – I don’t want to give out junk with artificial colors, flavors, preservatives and high-fructose corn syrup to all these little kids.

On the other hand, nobody wants to be this house…

thank you Jennifer from Medicinal Nutrition for the hysterical someecard!

So, I have been hunting down “Better” Halloween Candy options for our family and wanted to share them with yours.

First things first, there is the Natural Candy Store if you just want to order online and be done with it. They have sections for Organic Candy, GMO-Free Candy, Made in the USA Only and even Special Diets. Pretty cool, right?

If you have access to a natural foods store, you can find some mini-packages of pretzels, small boxes of raisins,

Organic Gummy Candy and of course, tons of Organic Chocolates. The biggest different I am seeing this year at stores like Whole Foods is a lot more options!

But the candy that I am most excited about is a new product called UNREAL CANDY. I found it at Bartell Drugs and they sell at Target and all kinds of other mainstream stores. This is such a cool company with a great story!

They only make five varieties of candy so far but they are “UNJUNKED” versions of classics – peanut butter cups, snickers, milky way, peanut m&m’s and m&m’s. Ummmm, what? And, they make mini sizes. Yes, it only gets better. They are a lot less expensive than some of the fancy bags of candy I spotted at Whole Foods. So, if by any chance, your little one happens to be trick or treating at my house, they will most likely be getting a mini UNREAL of some type (unless we eat them all, which is seriously possible).

Oh, and the most important part — all of their candy is made WITHOUT Corn Syrup, Partially Hydrogenated Oils, Artificial Ingredients (Including Colors!!!), GMO’s Or Preservatives.

Now I need to get in touch with owner and see if they can make a UNJUNKED version of twix, goldenberg’s peanut chews and 100grand bars. If that happens, I am investing. lol

Oh, and I am going to be a Pirate’s helper so I need to get a costume! I should post a picture of us all in our garb for fun.

“unless we eat them all, which is seriously possible . . . “ That’s our downfall with Halloween candy – we eat as much as we give away. But that’s because we overbuy. You’d think we’d learn, wouldn’t you? Anyway, I haven’t heard of Unreal candy – will definitely be looking for that. Sounds terrific! Thanks.

I hope you can find it – it’s a great alternative to the classic “junk”. My new tactic is to send all the “overbought candy” to my husband’s office the day after Halloween (with a couple pieces secretly reserved 😉 ).

That is so interesting! You really should spend a Halloween in the States – you would be blown away by how big of a “holiday” it is!

I love the way you think! That cartoon is hysterical and my kids made me feel that way last year (not going to publicly elaborate but it definitely was lame, I admit it;). I saw this candy at BJ’s in passing but I’m now going to give it more consideration. It sounds perfect to solve our “dilemma” and not be lame. 😉

Definitely Amy!! I am especially thrilled that that the UNJUNKED candy is available at mass-market places b/c that is where it is needed most in my opinion. Pretty cool!

I agree! We bought some yesterday to give out on Halloween. Now I’m not the lame house, but I’m also not contributing to the unhealthy eating habits of this country which is so important to me. Thank you!! xo
